Class Overview
Chess club for beginner-experienced. Experienced players can play each other and those new to chess will learn from the ground up. Experienced players will still likely learn some new strategies! Ages 9 and up is simply a recommendation (my kids usually played at 7/8) you know your child and their interest.
Wednesday October 9 @ 9:45am we will visit the World Chess Hall of Fame in St. Louis. We will meet at the big king chess piece for a picture at 9:45 and I will collect donations right after! If you wish to bring siblings, etc. of course they are welcome. I will need tentative RSVPs for a rough headcount by September 9. If you don’t RSVP by then you can still come, but we want to give them an idea of how many bodies. We will have a tour of the Hall of Fame with free Admission or appreciated donations of $3 per child and $5 per adult if you wish to contribute to their operation. I hope you and your student can join us! Details to come.
This Semester we will have random drawings to win chess club merch! This raffle will include each present student’s name in the drawing. The number of opportunities your student has to win some fun chess club gear will be based on their attendance.
This semester we will have themed dress each week like Red White and Blue Week, Hawaiian week, etc. Please be sure to check the class group for this information once you get fully registered and I add you to the group. When we have at least 50% participation in the themed week the students will get a “Star” on our roster. Everytime we get three stars we will have reward parties throughout the semester! Reward party may look like candy treats, playing some different games like heads up seven up, and just mixing things up to keep life fun!
Please note, that if your child does not sign up for chess club, they are not able to visit and play. Only registered students will be allowed in the classroom going forward, as it becomes too disruptive. Parents should also refrain from bringing younger siblings in to play if they are not registered. The classroom is very small once you line up students on both sides of the tables, and we usually have just enough room for the registered students, and usually that amount of chess boards. Also, students are expected to attend and remain in class for the entirety of the class just like any other class. If you need them to leave early, please come get them from class so we know they are accounted for. if your student slips out of class unannounced or says they will use the restroom and don’t return, etc. they will be dropped from class after two warnings to stay in class for the entire class. Students should not bring snacks to class. Hopefully these new rules will help this semester be less chaotic.
Parents please note The last 3 to 4 weeks of chess club will be matches for awards. It will be important for children to try their best to be there to be eligible for awards. How many weeks this lasts will be based on the number of participants. On the last day of chess club the Chess club King will be announced after the final match. This will take place during last day presentations/award ceremonies. There will be no class on week 12. Don’t miss the Royal moment!
