Instructor: Nikki Folkerts
Class Overview
This course will serve as a very brief introduction to physics and chemistry. We will spend 6 weeks on chemistry topics and 6 weeks on physics topics. The chemistry lab experiments will be taken from the American Chemical Society’s education resources. Though not strictly necessary, students would benefit greatly from utilizing the website to study the topics further. We will perform 1 laboratory experiment from each of the six chapters on the website:
- Chapter 1 – Matter (Solids, Liquids, and Gases)
- Chapter 2 – Changes of State
- Chapter 3 – Density
- Chapter 4 – The Periodic Table and Bonding
- Chapter 5 – The Water Molecule and Dissolving
- Chapter 6 – Chemical Change
The physics labs we perform will primarily deal with graphing and analyzing the data we collect using a motion sensor:
- Graphing Your Motion
- Speeding Up
- The Indy 100
- Crash Dummies
- Falling Objects
- Exploration with Optical Lenses
