The Amazing Generation read-aloud and discussion

“The Amazing Generation: Your Guide to Fun and Freedom in a Screen-Filled World is a book by Jonathan Haidt and Catherine Price, aimed at kids and tweens (ages 9-12) to help them navigate the challenges of a smartphone-dominated world, inspired by Haidt’s The Anxious Generation. It’s an illustrated, fun guide that educates children on how tech companies use psychological tactics to capture their attention, empowering them to make informed choices and choose real-world experiences over constant screen engagement, offering a positive path to a more authentic and adventurous life.

Key aspects of the book:

Target Audience: Directly addresses children and tweens (grades 4-7), not just their parents.

Core Message: Tech companies use “greedy wizards” (apps, games) to steal time and energy; kids can choose to be “rebels” who reclaim their lives for real-world fun and freedom.

Content: Includes surprising facts, a graphic novel, interactive challenges, and anecdotes from young adults who regret early smartphone use.

Approach: Avoids lecturing by educating kids on the “secrets” of big tech, allowing them to make their own choices.

** If any student would like to buy (or borrow from the library – there are I believe 44 copies in the system) it might be useful for them to follow along and see the graphic novel parts closer)

***I will add that this class would be completely relevant and appropriate for those older than tweens, so anyone 4th to 12th (and adults) are welcome (this book was certainly eye opening to me as an adult as well!) My goal is to read this book aloud through the semester and have discussion intermittently as I do so.
