Class Overview

World Literature

This high school level world literature course will focus on great literary works from Germany and Great Britain.  It would be a great accompaniment to a world history course.  Using Progeny Press study guides as well as The Complete Grimms’ Fairy Tales and some hilarious dark comical tales from Struwwelpeter, we will be reading and studying several original German fairy tales and cautionary tales from Heinrich Hoffman as well as two British novels:  The Screwtape Letters (first half of the semester), and A Christmas Carol (second half of the semester).   I have used Progeny Press for years and I like how they are written from a Christian worldview and incorporate scripture verses with the novels students will be studying. I will upload the Progeny Press study guides to Basecamp so you can print them directly from there since I already purchased digital copies.  All you will need to supply are copies of the two British novels, a binder keep study guides in, and a pen or pencil.  You do not have to purchase The Complete Grimms’ Fairy Tales.  The tales can easily be accessed online, checked out from the library, or purchased if desired.  I will have copies of Struwwelpeter to share.

Students WILL be expected to come to class each week with their Progeny Press study guides completed and prepared to discuss in class.  Please do not sign up your student if homework cannot be completed, as this course requires a lot of student participation.  The only homework required for this class will be for the British novel portion.  There will be a pre-reading assignment and one essay assigned for each book in addition to the weekly study guide assignments.  Students will need to begin reading and completing the study guide two weeks prior to the first class and two weeks after the last class in December.  (That way, they have eight weeks to complete each study guide.)  I will also have other fun activities planned for class in addition to the study guides.  Completing two Progeny Press study guides is equivalent to a half credit for high-schoolers.

*Please note,  aside from reading some short fairy tales, students will not have written homework for the German literary side of this class.  All written work while studying The Complete Grimms’ Fairy Tales and Struwwelpeter will be completed in class.

**I will also be offering this course in Spring 2025 and we will be reading Lord of the Flies and Out of the Silent Planet.  Both semesters would offer a full high school credit in this course.
