All Things Seuss
This class will feature a different Dr. Seuss’s book each week along with crafts, activities, and/or snacks that go with that book. We will practice rhyming and get our creative minds working as we jump into the world of Seuss!
Logophiles Anonymous
Logophiles are lovers of words and that’s what this class is all about! Whether you like learning new words, want to further enhance your vocabulary, or simply want to make your vernacular sound more impressive, this class is for you! Each week, students will come to class with five brand new words to share with the rest of the class. We will keep track of all these words on index cards kept in a small box. Plus, students will be challenged to use these words in everyday conversations and writing. Those who can show proof of using these words throughout the week (whether through a writing assignment or a video showing usage of these words) will earn points which will be redeemable for prizes on the last day of class. Students will be able to share about how they used these words with the rest of the class each week—so it gives students a chance to brush up on public speaking and maybe a bit of acting experience as well! This is sure to be a super fun class.
*Please note that the $5 fee is for prizes for the last day of class. Students will need to purchase their own index cards, index card box, and a-z file organizer separately prior to the first day of class.
Morning Time
Establishing a morning routine of school activities including calendar, memorization of the Childs Prayer by Margaret Betham-Edwards, singing the hymn “My Country ‘Tis of Thee” by Samuel Francis Smith, and story time. We will be following the Young Children’s Encyclopedia for Story time and learning spelling, music, geography, history, science, math, poetry, art, crafts, short video clips, interactive hands on activities intermittently.
Interactive hands on activities include: crafts, building Legos, measuring liquids/foods/each other, hopscotch, show and tell*, shopping/buying with money, playing instruments, experiencing culture cuisine, and *writing/mailing a letter based on the word/story each week.
Show and tell** We will have a show and tell on Mask the week of Halloween where students are encouraged to bring a mask from home or even an Indian hair dress. If they do not have one, no worries. We will make a craft paper bag mask.
Show and tell** on Museums in November. Encouraging students to bring any ancient artifacts, old letters, antiques (if allowed) or art work/things they think that would be worthy to be in a museum to show and tell about.
If your child is not able to write alphabetical letters, I do not think they would enjoy this class as much. We will be writing a simple letter/card to send, but they will be encouraged to do the writing portion. Also, we do have occasional worksheets to write words/learn to spell and that go along with the stories/people/places we are learning.
Words/stories we will cover include: Measurement, Mexico, Money, Mongoose, Moon, Moscow, Mail, Mask, Mountains, Mozart, Museums, and Music.
Chasing American Legends
Chasing American Legends is an up-close look at some of America’s heroes. Using a Christian worldview, join Texas politician Rick Green and his fun homeschooling family as they explore the United States and learn about our nation’s humble beginnings and rich history! Comedian Ben Stine also stars in this series. Each week will have a video and then discussion questions afterwards. Parents will need to purchase the study guide for $19.99 separately through the Wall Builders website.
Storybooks and STEAM
Each week I will read a different storybook and we will have a challenge based off of something in the book. Some challenge examples may be building a house out of non traditional supplies and testing its strength, camouflaging animals in nature, and designing an outfit. We will use a lot of different materials, some from nature, to complete our challenges. Everyone will be able to get their creativity flowing.
*There will be days that we use hot glue guns and possibly wire or other tricky material. If you have a young 8 year old they need to be able to follow directions for safety and make sure you are comfortable with them using these items.
Reading Rainbow
Each class will begin with watching a Reading Rainbow episode. The second half of class will be a craft, activity, or experiment that correlates with the episode topic. Some of the episode themes we will watch include, farm animals, dinosaurs, germs, and honeybees.
Photo Journaling
